Antony Takacs -- Blacksmith
When he was a young boy growing up in postwar Hungary Antony Takacs began learning traditional Old World methods of blacksmithing under the watchful eye and caring scrutiny of his father Zigmond.
A subsequent emigration to America at age sixteen resulted in a geology degree from The University of New Hampshire; followed by many years in a number of professions including teaching, architecture, and construction; with a final stint as a dairy farmer in Albion, Maine. But in 2005 - once his kids were grown - he chose to sell off the dairy farm and resume his life’s passion for ironwork.
Every piece Antony creates today utilizes those Old World methods (such as hand-hammered joinery and forge work) that he learned as a youth. This includes practical pieces like tables, candleholders, sign brackets, gates, and shelving – all based on numerous designs he’s developed. But he also welcomes commissions for departures from these models.
Additionally, Antony encourages an ongoing dialog geared towards developing and creating unique custom work to satisfy a demanding set of specifications for special situations.
And once in a while, he’ll throw out the rule book and create that elusive thing known as “art”. These truly special and highly unique pieces are particularly sought after by galleries.
Oh! And it’s pronounced: “ta-ka-ch"
